This program covers topics related to basic estate planning from the perspective of an elder law attorney. Attorneys should attend this program to gain knowledge in evaluating a client’s assets and how to properly advise them from a legal standpoint and receive key insights on planning for incapacity and creditor protection. Attorneys that wish to learn how to identify the key ethical issues that arise in estate planning, particularly concerning senior clients may find this program helpful.

Attendees will learn basic estate planning terminology, key estate planning documents, and execution requirements. This program will cover topics such as providing guidance to clients regarding their current and future needs based on their income and assets, as well as anticipating issues related to creditors, potential incapacity, and disabilities. Participants will be provided with a guided approach to identifying ethical issues that arise in estate planning and proposed solutions to address these issues.

This course is designed for attorneys that are new to estate planning or attorneys with some familiarity with estate planning who would prefer a refresher course regarding basic estate planning.

  • Review key legal terminology concerning estate planning
  • Understand the legal documents which constitute a basic estate plan
  • Evaluate a client’s assets and properly advise clients concerning their estate plan
  • Prepare to anticipate issues concerning creditors, potential incapacity, and disabilities and how they may affect your client’s estate plan
  • Assess ethical issues in representing estate planning clients and identify proposed solutions to resolve these issues
