About The Lecturer

Professor Heidi K. Brown is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, Associate Dean for Upper Level Writing at New York Law School, and a former litigator in the construction industry. In 2023, New York Law School appointed Heidi to develop a new and best-in-class center for Thinking, Researching, and Writing and invigorate the institution’s upper-level writing curriculum.

Engaging in her passion for innovative pedagogy, Heidi has designed three new courses integrating legal writing skills and Generative AI tools. Heidi is the author of a three-volume legal writing book series entitled The Mindful Legal Writer. She also has written and published three books about well-being and performance for law students and lawyers: The Introverted Lawyer, Untangling Fear in Lawyering, and The Flourishing Lawyer: A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Performance and Well-Being.

In 2021, Heidi earned a master’s degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the 2023 Award Recipient for “outstanding contributions to well-being in legal education” from the Association of American Law Schools’ Section on Balance and Well-Being in Legal Education, and was selected as a 2023-2024 SCRIBES Fellow by the American Society of Legal Writers.

Heidi serves on the Executive Board of the Balance and Well-Being in Legal Education Section of the Association of American Law Schools. She is the Well-Being Co-Chair of the Legal Writing Institute. She also serves on the International Bar Association’s International Advisory Board for the Professional Well-Being Commission. Building on a foundation of thirty years of experience in legal practice and academia, Heidi champions the importance of openly discussing stressors, anxieties, and fears in lawyering, and helping anxious law students and lawyers tap into individual strengths to become profoundly effective advocates—in their authentic voices. Heidi is also passionate about helping members of the legal profession (and writers in other genres) embrace GenAI tools to boost confidence in producing high-quality writing.

Heidi is an internationally-recognized public speaker on issues of lawyer identity, writer identity, introversion, peak performance, healthy teams, and flourishing. Her website is www.theflourishinglawyer.org.
