About The Lecturer
Andrea McGinn is a lawyer, legal innovator, and consultant. She graduated from Drake University Law School in 2015 after enjoying extensive experience as a student attorney in the Drake Children’s Rights Clinic. Andrea built her own solo practice out of law school prior to partnering up with AJ Skogerson to co-found The Law Shop Iowa. Andrea’s drive for positive change in the world is revealed in the way The Law Shop strives to improve both access to justice and the personal well-being of other professionals working within the judicial system.
Andrea is Past Chair of the Iowa State Bar Association Family and Juvenile Law Section as well as an active member and leader in organizations such as Iowa Collaborative Divorce, Iowa Association for Justice, International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, Iowa Domestic Violence Death Review Team, Iowa Child Protection Council, and other professional and community-based organizations.
Andrea and her husband Nick have three young children - Nolan, Nashton, and Lakyn - who help to inspire her continuing passion for helping children and families by practicing primarily in the areas of family and child welfare law. A fellow entrepreneur, Nick owns Advanced Plumbing, a growing business in central Iowa. Between kids’ activities and work, the McGinn family enjoys camping, swimming, boating, and time together at Lake Marie in Northern Missouri.
The Law Shop Iowa
In 2017, AJ and Andrea combined forces to co-found The Law Shop Iowa – the State’s first private practice law firm providing unbundled legal services to nearly all clients. The Law Shop has quickly become an international leader in proving that offering high-quality legal assistance on a limited-scope basis increases access to justice for all while vastly improving the well-being of lawyers in many ways.
Since its founding, The Law Shop has grown from two lawyers with no staff to nine lawyers, three full-time staff, two part-time staff, a Pop Up Law Shop in a nearby rural area, a sibling Shop in Minnesota, and more. AJ and Andrea regularly present and provide professional workshops and individual and group coaching on unbundled legal services.
The Law Shop has been featured in The Iowa Lawyer, the Illinois Bar Journal, and the American Bar Association (ABA) Journal, among other publications. AJ and Andrea are also contributing authors to the recently released ABA book “Design Your Law Practice: Using Design Thinking to Get Next Level Results.” In 2022, AJ and Andrea co-founded The Law Shop Library, which provides education and growth support for sibling firms such as The Law Shop Minnesota and others coming soon.
