Halting the Rise of Attorney Substance Abuse
About This Course
This course examines the causes leading to attorney use of illicit drugs and offers drug education and substance abuse prevention. This course covers the drugs classified as illegal substances and the effects on legal professionals, as well as the increased risk that addiction imposes on young attorneys.
In addition to education on the dangers of substance abuse, this course summarizes actions classified as ethical misconduct for lawyers regarding drugs and alcohol. Through case studies, participants will be able to examine the risks associated with drug use, including the consequences of felony convictions, violation of ethical standards, and potential disbarment due to professional misconduct.
This course is designed for attorneys at any practice level interested in learning more about how substance use and mental health issues affect lawyers and the violation of ethical standards.
Learning Objectives:
- Define the effects of illicit substances, including marijuana, “club drugs,” and methamphetamine
- Observe the increased risk of addiction for young attorneys
- Identify the sanctions imposed on lawyers for professional misconduct involving substance abuse
- Assess the consequences that attorney addiction and substance abuse have on colleagues and clients
