Advising the Startup Nonprofit: Exemption and Compliance Requirements

Attorneys who work with or represent nonprofit organizations need to understand the state and federal rules regulating a nonprofit in order to properly advise the nonprofit organization. Lecturer Karim Hanafy, who was previously employed with the IRS’s Tax-Exempt Division and has worked with over 1,000 nonprofit organizations in private practice for over 20 years, will guide attorneys and offer his best practices to set up a nonprofit organization properly. Discussions will include proper entity structure and governance, advising startup nonprofit organizations, the IRS’s permissible and prohibited activities, and filing and other compliance requirements once the nonprofit is exempt.

Attorneys who work for or represent a nonprofit organization, in-house counsel who serve as a legal advisor to a nonprofit organization, or those attorneys who are interested in working with a new or existing nonprofit organization are encouraged to attend this introductory program and obtain a foundational working background in this area of the law!
