This program will teach attorneys the critical ethical information needed to successfully manage their legal practice. Discussions will include all aspects of legal ethics including: duty of diligence, competence, supervision, and when you need to ask for help; duty of confidentiality and when disclosure of confidential information is permitted; identifying and avoiding conflicts of interest, as well as drafting waivers; identifying situations where "insider trading" may arise; maintaining data security in the modern office; interactions with persons other than clients; and law firm-related issues.

Attorneys will learn the relevant legal framework, best practices to identify ethical issues, and how to resolve ethical issues through interactive hypotheticals and real case scenarios.

Attorneys who are admitted to practice law, from all levels of experience and practice fields, are encouraged to attend.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore duty of diligence and competence (ABA Model Rules 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 5.1, and 6.1)
  • Investigate duty of confidentiality (ABA Model Rules 1.6, 1.9, and 1.18)
  • Identify conflicts of interest (ABA Model Rules 1.2, 1.7-1.11, and 1.18)
  • Recognize and avoid insider trading situations (ABA Model Rules 1.6-1.8)
  • Evaluate transactions with persons other than clients (ABA Model Rules 1.7-1.9, 1.13, 1.14, 1.18, and 4.1-4.4)
  • Understand ethical considerations at law firms and associations (ABA Model Rules 1.17 and 5.1-5.7)
