Law enforcement use of force is currently one of the most inflammatory issues confronting society. In this course, attorneys will learn why the issue is so problematic, how the courts have arrived at the current standards for determining the legality of use of force, and the application of those standards from case law. Additionally, the course will address and discuss current events pertaining to the use of force.

Attorneys from all areas of practice and levels of experience will benefit from attending this course.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine pre-1985 legal standards for the use of force
  • Explore the outcomes from Tennessee v. Garner
  • Investigate the Graham v. Connor case
  • Identify the appropriate standard determined by status
  • Evaluate applications of the 14th Amendment standards
  • Discover current issues in use of force
